This breed was created in the 1990s by Doris Pollatschek in Israel, who crossed local domestic cats with African wildcats to get the desired look. The name "Kanaani" comes from the ancient region of Canaan, and it's meant to evoke the idea of a cat that just wandered out of the desert. The Kanaani breed was officially recognized by the WCF back in 2000, but not many people are breeding them. Most of the breeders who work with this breed are small, selective, and mostly based in Europe.
